alb3647758 Young Lady in 1866. Artist: Édouard Manet (French, Paris 1832-1883 Paris). Dimensions: 72 7/8 x 50 5/8 in. (185.1 x 128.6 cm). Date: 1866.Manet's model, Victorine Meurent, had recently posed as the brazen nudes in Olympia and Luncheon on the Grass (both Musée d'Orsay, Paris). Here, appearing relatively demure, she flaunts an intimate silk dressing gown. Critics eyed the painting as a rejoinder to Courbet's Woman with a Parrot (29.100.57) and as indicative of Manet's "current vice" of failing to "value a head more than a slipper." Recent scholars have interpreted it as an allegory of the five senses: the nosegay (smell), the orange (taste), the parrot-confidant (hearing), and the man's monocle she fingers (sight and touch). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

akg5422035 The Anwar-i Suhayli or 'The Lights of Canopus', commonly known as the Fables of Bidpai in the West, is a Persian version of the ancient Indian collection of animal fables, the Panchatantra. It tells a tale of a Persian physician, Burzuyah, and his mission to India, where he stumbles upon a book of stories collected from the animals who reside there. In a similar vein to the Arabian Nights, the fables in the manuscript are inter-woven as the characters of one story recount the next, leading up to three or four degrees of narrative embedding. Many usually have morals or offer philosophical glimpses into human behaviour, emphasising loyalty and teamwork.

alb4261432 At night on 19 July 1846, on the road between Bell-lloc and Els Alamús, near Tossal de la Moradilla, eight armed bandits assaulted the stagecoach-courier that was coming from the Hostal de les Soques de Bellpuig, an important inn. The stagecoach was carrying the former Member of Parliament Francesc Perpinyà i Massot, who was kidnapped to demand a ransom for his liberation. The bandits started a journey on foot through the Lleida plain to take him to a place where they could keep him hidden. On 27 July 1846, Perpinyà's body was found in a well near Margalef. Jaume Banqué Bas, known as "Lo Parrot", a bandit leader who was believed to have participated in the kidnapping of Francesc Perpinyà, was condemned to death and executed for this act. alb9453231 Dance Blanket, c. 1840-1850, 53 x 62 x 7/8 in. (134.62 x 157.48 x 2.22 cm) (without backing), Wool, silk, beads; needlework, United States, 19th century, This rare blanket combines two important Native American decorative forms: beading and ribbonwork. The appliqué ribbon designs combine traditional Native work with American folk quilting. While the ribbonwork is unattributed, the beadwork was probably made by the Dakota. This superb example of Native American artistry was passed down through the prominent LaFramboise family of Minnesota. Family lore states that this blanket was once owned by Jane Dickson LaFramboise (born circa 1820), a woman of Anishinabe/Dakota descent whose father had good relations with the Dakota. The blanket was said to have been used at her wedding in 1845 to Joseph LaFramboise who established one of the first trading posts in Minnesota.
